PDI InspectionA PDI inspection on a fire extinguisher stands for Pre-Delivery Inspection. It’s the safety and quality check performed before an extinguisher is handed over to the customer. Here’s what it involves:
No dents, rust, corrosion, or paint damage | No signs of leakage | Safety pin and tamper seal intact |
The manufacturer’s label is present, legible and in English | Extinguisher matches UK/EU/BS standards (e.g. BS EN 3) | Check the pressure gauge is in the green zone |
Correct hose and nozzle supplied | Wall bracket or stand included | The extinguisher is weighed |
CommissioningCommissioning is the process of making a new fire extinguisher ready for service. In the UK, commissioning is required by BS 5306-3 and must be carried out onsite by a competent fire extinguisher technician.
Checking the extinguisher for damage or defects | Pressure gauge is in the green zone and checked using an equalisation pressure tester | Verifying the hose, nozzle, and pins are assembled to British Standards |
Making sure the extinguisher is appropriate for the location | Adding identification signs | Completing the service label and certification |
Commission & Fit | ||
Installing a wall bracket or stand and adding required signage | Ensuring correct mounting height | Placing the extinguisher in the correct location (escape routes, fire points, etc.) |
Certified Disposal of Old ExtinguishersCertified disposal is a service that ensures your old extinguishers are removed in full compliance with UK regulations, regardless of the extinguishing agent. By arranging certified disposal at the same time as buying new extinguishers, or after a service, everything is carried out by the same provider. Saving compliance headaches.
Disposing of old extinguishers under UK regulations | Using certified, registered waste facilities | Receiving certified legal disposal documentation |
A. ABC dry powder fire extinguishers can be used on Class A solid combustibles, Class B flammable liquids, Class C flammable gases and electrical fires.
Class A – Solid Combustibles (wood, paper, cloth etc.)
Class B – Flammable Liquids (oils, solvents, alcohol, gasoline etc.)
Class C – Flammable Gases (propane, butane, petroleum gases etc)
A. The canister has a red body, a blue banner running along the top section labelling it POWDER, and a horn-shaped nozzle. White capitalised text is used for the POWDER label.
A. ABC dry powder fire extinguishers are commonly found in fabrication industries, industrial units, outside events, garage forecourts, businesses with large boiler rooms, LPG dispensing plants, welding or flame cutting businesses.
A. All our portable fire extinguishers are supplied ready for use, but those with larger capacities may need to be filled and charged prior to the first time they’re used. The product listing will explain this clearly.
A. Fire extinguishers must be serviced every 12 months, this is known as the “basic service”. This service should be performed in accordance with British Standard BS5036-3 and conducted by a third-party, appropriately trained technician.
A. This depends entirely on what you are trying to extinguish, below are some examples of fires you could encounter.

A: In the fire extinguisher evaluation, a scenario is set up involving a 1m x 1m metallic plate suspended by insulators and connected to an AC transformer generating 35,000V between the plate and the ground. The extinguisher under scrutiny is positioned so that its nozzle aims at the plate's centre, maintaining a minimum distance of 1m. An ammeter is attached between the extinguisher handle and the ground, as well as between the nozzle and the ground. The extinguisher is discharged toward the plate, and the resulting current is measured.
To pass the test, the current flowing between the extinguisher handle and the ground, as well as between the nozzle and the ground, must not exceed 0.5 mA. This value represents the threshold for human perception and is one-tenth of the typically required current for a muscular reaction. This criterion must be met consistently throughout the entire discharge process of the portable fire extinguisher.
Successfully tested extinguishers are labelled to indicate their suitability for application on live electrical equipment, specifying usage up to 1000V at a distance of 1m. Extinguishers that fail the test or those that haven't undergone testing (including water and foam extinguishers discharged as a jet and some non-kitemarked extinguishers that have not been submitted for evaluation) are marked with a warning: "Do not use on live electrical equipment.

Fire Protection Shop specialise in the supply of high-quality fire extinguishers. There are many different classifications of fire and so our products include a variety of different extinguisher types. For example, we offer water or foam fire extinguishers for solid combustibles and carbon dioxide fire extinguishers for flammable liquid or electrical fires. Each extinguishing agent comes with its benefits. Typically, water extinguishers are cheaper, produce a cooling effect and prevent reignition once the fire has been extinguished. Carbon dioxide extinguishers are clean agents, they leave no residue, are suitable for electrical fires and are often used on liquid fires which include petrol, oil or other solvents.
In addition to our extinguishers, we offer a range of fire safety products to both domestic and commercial premises. This includes the supply of fire blankets, extinguisher stands, smoke alarms, first aid kits and much more. Our entire range is sourced from reputable brand manufacturers at competitive prices. Also, all of our products carry a full warranty and guarantee and are supplied with relevant fixings where applicable.
So, for fire extinguishers, alarms and all your other fire safety needs, trust Fire Protection Shop to give you the quality, expertise and service you require.
